Why should a roof be well insulated?

Quite simply because, on the one hand, the law sets standards that must be observed when building or refurbishing a house. On the other hand, the federal, state, and municipal governments provide inducements to increase the efficiency of insulations. Apart from that, self-interest is a powerful motive to install insulation, occasioned by high heating expenses caused by high energy losses and, most importantly, by the discomfort of living in draughty attic rooms. Many reasons indeed to catch up as quickly as possible with what you have missed so far, and to insulate your roof comprehensively.

Sustainability and climate protection

Old buildings in particular lose much heat through the roof. Accordingly, the roof offers the biggest saving potential, for uninsulated old buildings consume four to five times as much heating energy as new houses. Therefore, you should protect your roof particularly well from heat loss, thereby reducing your CO2 emissions sustainably at the same time.

In most cases, the surface of a roof is greater than that of any other part of the building. Consequently, the amount of energy lost through the roof may account for up to 30 percent of the overall energy loss of a building. By insulating the roof efficiently, you will lower your energy consumption materially and improve your living quality. You will thus save on heating expenses and make a crucial contribution towards a positive environmental balance. Moreover, the value of your property will increase considerably, and there are government subsidies to be had for energy-efficient modernisation. The right insulation may save more than one third of your energy consumption.

Compared to the fibrous insulating materials that are frequently used, the heat conductivity of polyurethane insulation panels is much lower. In other words: they do not allow heat to pass as easily as the former; consequently, their insulating effect is better. Having a thermal conductivity rating of 023 (corresponding to 0.023W(mK) heat conductivity), an aluminium-laminated polyurethane insulation panel allows more than 40% less heat to pass than the fibre insulating material that is common today. Thus, the insulation performance of an expanded plastic panel of equal thickness is markedly superior to that of a fibrous material. Alternatively, slimmer layers of equal performance may be installed in a roof.
