Test procedures

Test procedures in the field of surface technology refer to special testing conducted to determine the suitability of a coating system for a specific field of application.

In the scope of a test procedure it is examined whether the test pieces employed display a required or desired characteristic or if processing faults, deviating dimensions or insufficient function exist. In the area of surface coating, this may be examined in the form of weathering tests. The physical properties and chemical resistance as well as fastening characteristics of a surface coating can also be determined and evaluated with special test procedures.

The framework conditions and sequence of a test procedure are defined in corresponding standards such as DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung), ISO (International Organization for Standardization) or ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). In addition, in many cases there are individual customer specifications and non-standardised test methods (“in-house procedures”), which are employed according to area of application and sector.
