Forms of corrosion

The term “corrosion” refers to a phenomenon commonly known as “rust”. Brownish-red rust forms on iron, whilst copper roofs acquire a greenish patina and aluminium parts turn white. However, what at first seems so familiar is revealed as complex on closer inspection.

According to DIN EN ISO standard 8044 corrosion is the physicochemical interaction between a metal and its environment, which can result in changes in the material and therefore considerable limitations of functionality of components, the environment or the technical system as a whole.
