Dry-film coat thick­ness

In surface technology the dry-film coat thickness refers to the thickness of a coating layer. This has a key influence on the corrosion protection and other characteristics of a coating.

Many product characteristics and requirements of a surface can only be achieved with specific minimal or maximum coat thicknesses. This means that the application and measurement of dry-film coat thickness precisely tailored to the respective application is elementary for the quality of a coating. The distribution and evenness of the coat thickness also plays an important role - because optimal performance can only be achieved with an even application across the entire surface of the component. Typically, a minimum coat thickness or a coat thickness range at various measuring points is defined. Achieving this precise coat thickness distribution is a central task of application technology.

Various procedures are available for measuring the dry-film coat thickness of a coating. For example:

  • transverse section, wedge and eddy current method
  • magnetic-inductive measurement
  • testing via x-ray fluorescence or backscattering  as well as ultrasound or photothermal procedures
